Does the COVID-19 vaccine make people sick?

Do you know what happens in your body after a vaccination? None of the authorized and recommended COVID-19 vaccines contain the live virus that causes COVID-19. Therefore, they can’t actually make you sick. Vaccines teach our immune systems how to recognize and fight viruses. Sometimes, this process can cause symptoms, but these are normal and are signs that the body is building protection against the virus.

Hi, my name is Dr. Marta Gabryelska and today I will answer the question if COVID-19 vaccine can make people more sick. This presentation was created with BioRender. The simple answer to this question is NO. To cause the COVID-19 the vaccine would have to contain the virus itself. None of currently authorized and recommended COVID-19 vaccines contain the life virus that causes the infection. This means that the COVID-19 vaccine cannot make you sick with COVID. COVID-19 vaccines teach our immune systems how to recognize and fight the virus that is causing the infection. Sometimes, this process can cause symptoms such as fever. These symptoms are normal and are signs that the body is building protection against the virus that causes COVID-19. These side effects arise due to exposure to the vaccine components that are to stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against SARS-Cov-2. Initial first dose of vaccination is causing a little spike in the amount of antibodies in your body. The secondary exposure to the vaccine, called the second dose of the vaccine, further increases the immune response. After both vaccinations your body is pushed to fight with, what it thinks is an infection, but in reality, it is just mimicking it. After each dose of the vaccine, some side effects might occur. Some concerns were raised on so called antibody dependent enhancement, which can cause serious effects after exposure to the vaccine followed by the infection. However, these concerns were based on some observation in animal models and different viruses. So far, there is no confirmed evidence that vaccines against COVID-19 can cause such a reaction. If you’re still worried about vaccinations, please watch our other videos that are about that.
