Our Mission

Research careers

Research careers can be challenging [1]. Employment instability and a high-pressure work environment combined with salaries that are sometimes not commensurate with the level of skills and knowledge required for the job, affect researchers’ wellbeing [2] and mental health [3].

A key aspect of a researcher’s career is public engagement, outreach, and science communication. While science communication [4] initiatives have grown in importance, many scientists still do not receive relevant training and support, thus increasing the perceived distance between researchers and the public.

Why support is essential?

Showcasing research and learning to communicate with the public are exciting ways to grow and expand career prospects. These important skills are of relevance to many, but particularly so for young researchers, who are facing the challenges of climbing the academic career ladder.

Furthermore, by developing broader skill sets, these skills can help to facilitate career progression outside of academia, should a person wish to do so. Additionally, promoting open dialogue between researchers and the community increases public trust and scientists’ visibility.

how do we do it?

STEMcognito wants to support and promote scientists – especially early and mid-career researchers. We bring researchers closer to society, helping them develop the skills needed for effective communication, in order to increase access to science. STEMcognito freely hosts researchers’ videos, including interviews with scientists and promotes their work on social media.

We are especially enthusiastic about promoting women, people of colour, and the LGBTQ+ community through our channels. STEMcognito provides an international support network for people looking for help in their scientific journey by facilitating collaboration, knowledge transfer, and connection building that may be helpful in future career development.
